My Jesus Nightlight Challenged My Beliefs

cast resin, LED nightlight base

2017

As a child, my bedroom was lit by a vintage Infant Jesus of Prague statue at night. This statue was plastic and wore fabric vestments that made the statue glow a dull red. For many years I loved and cherished this nighttime ritualistic object, and trusted it to keep me safe from the harm in the darkness. However, when I got older I began to question the actual safety of the nightlight itself (it would get very hot, and sat on the shag carpet in my bedroom), and suddenly I was having repeated nightmares of dying in a house fire caused by this very object. For this piece, I cast a smaller replica of my childhood nightlight in bright red resin, which lights up when people walk past it. (Edition of 7, arranged throughout a gallery.)
